Called a Lichtenberg pattern, it's caused by the electricity picking and re-picking pathways across the surface of a wooden object until it finally connects the two probes. 
 
The pathways are filled with epoxy to highlight and accentuate the beauty inherent in this form of artwork.  Every pattern is totally unique- truly a one of a kind gift!
 
Doubles as tabletop art when not in use for a party.
